NOW OR NEVER 2025
APPLICATION FOR [ANEW] BY ELLE SHIMADA X RHYS NEWLING
SUPPORT MATERIAL - CONCEPTUAL LEAD & PROJECT HISTORY
"ANEW" is a immersive audio-visual experience that imagines a future shaped by the intersection of technology, nature, and humanity, brought to life by Naarm-based artists Elle Shimada, projection artist Rhys Newling, and a collective of forward-thinking Naarm based QTBIPOC artists.
This large-scale, immersive dancefloor event at the Royal Exhibition Building embodies the themes of healing, collective liberation, self-efficacy, and co-dreaming through Elle’s album [ANEW]. Crafted to engage audiences with an innovative blend of narrative storytelling, cinematic visuals, live music, dance, and club culture, "ANEW" transports participants to a futuristic realm where music, projection, high art, club culture, dance, fashion and story narrative all come together to offer an immersive audience experience.
Through its forward-thinking design and multidisciplinary approach, "ANEW" promises to create a unique, transformative experience for the Now or Never attendees.

“What if you went to a cinema to watch a movie, but instead of sitting still, we are dancing at the rave?”
“What if everyone on the dance floor was an active participants of the movie instead of bi standards, changing the narrative as thousands of people move our bodies together to local, visionary artists?”
These are the conversations that inspired ANEW—an immersive celebration of what it means to live authentically in a digital age. I want to design experience that invites them to become active participants in the story building—rediscovering the right to not just survive but to thrive, co-dreaming, and finding collective joy in a fractured, often disconnected world.
“Nothing feels real anymore, this world is mad...” The world feels dystopian—the way AI merges with human minds, social media replaces in-person connection, and fear and control divide neighbors. What remains of our humanity? ANEW offers a simple answer: our humanness—the need for connection, joy, and shared experiences—that can’t be drowned out by the digital noise. Gathering peacefully, dancefloor and centering our joy is a uniquely human experience. Raw, real, emotive and connective.
Through ANEW, I reimagine dance as both personal and collective healing—a movement-driven practice that grounds us in our raw, human-ness. Each step becomes a pathway to reclaiming our connection—to ourselves, each other, and the freedom that dance embodies in a fractured world.
Dance: as a form of active meditation and embodied thinking.
Dance floor: as a ritual for collective liberation, embracing our connectivity.
I want to create a show that feels all-encompassing, like a collective prayer that transcend societal bounds. And to design an audience experience that brings us into the moment and lets us experience our humanness and connectivity. Because that’s when I feel most alive. From a very early career stage, I’ve always been a person with big ideas. Rhys Newling has been a collaborator of mine since my first ever curated residency, where we explored the theme of womb, future ancestor, dance as an active meditation and collective liberation ritual. He has trusted in my vision from the day one, and I have full confidence that after 7 years of collaboration, we are ready to level up to the next sphere.
Through collaboration with my good friends—Rhys Newling’s stunning visuals, live bands, dancers, and a 30-meter screen—ANEW invites you to feel, heal, and connect. The dance floor becomes the main character, and you’re part of the story. It’s a space for collective re-imagining and liberation. A reimagined utopia, always within ourselves.
Now, I am finally ready to bring together my vision into full execution.
The vision is there, we just need a space to make it into reality.
Welcome to ANEW—a night where we come together to experience raw, real humanness through dance as a ritual of bodily thinking and active meditation. A night of immersive journey through sound, visual, dance, fashion and an emotional story telling that embrace our connectivity.

I wrote my second album, ANEW, while heartbroken and in a dark place. This body of work is a sonic diary of my messy, raw, and almost comically tragic healing process. A journey through layers of complex emotions—grief, acceptance, feminine rage, questioning, healing, and finally, peace and reclaiming the power within me through love. This unapologetically emotional process has been liberating, and I’m beyond excited to share it with the world.
In creating ANEW, I collaborated with over 40 queer, trans, Indigenous, Black, and POC artists. Together, we are a collective of stories and talents that not only deserve recognition but will inspire. My collaborators are visionary young creatives who will thrive with this opportunity to develop a show—supporting my application means representing all our CO-DREAMING.
In a world that feels disconnected and divided, I believe this show can offer a powerful antidote, crafting an experience that is deeply connective and reflective.
The vision, team and music is already there. We are ready for a space for full execution and weave our future through our own narrative. Time is Now or Never.

For the Now or Never Festival, I am excited to craft an immersive visual experience that brings Elle's album, "Anew," to life.
Drawing on my extensive experience as the House VJ inside the Royal Exhibition Building during the past Now or Never’s Programs, I have witnessed first-hand how content tailored to the design significantly enhances the overall impact. This realization has motivated me to develop a show from the ground up, ensuring all of the content for this performance is rendered to the exact specifications of the final stage design. Collaborating closely with Elle, I aim to visualizea the album's narrative through stunning visuals that resonate deeply with her music and culture.
One of the key techniques I plan to employ is Anamorphic Warping. This innovative method distorts images and videos, creating dynamic, immersive effects when projected onto large, irregular surfaces. It transforms static visuals into interactive experiences, manifesting in three-dimensional illusions and captivating movement. To achieve flawless synchronization with the performance, we will utilize advanced timecode technology used by major touring acts around the world.
Given the ambitious scope of this project, an expansive video wall is essential, making the Royal Exhibition Building's flagship stage the ideal venue for this unique showcase.

PROJECT HISTORY
Elle and Rhys’s collaboration traces back to Elle’s inaugural performance residency in 2018—a groundbreaking, grassroots initiative built entirely on creative passion and community-driven support.
The residency was conceived as a platform for ambitious, experimental, and playful collaboration, pulling in a collective of young local creatives, expressing their talents throughout the four-week program. At the time, neither Elle, Rhys or all the people envisioned art as a financial pursuit; rather, it was a vehicle for expression and connection.
This residency spanned four unique weeks, each themed and directed by Elle, with full venue projection art by Rhys, bringing together a full band, diverse acts, fashion shows, a tattoo station, a mini-orchestra, and dance battles—all accessible for a $10 door fee. Audience would enter the room and be immersised in fully projected room, with comically cheap tickets, making it accessible for young and inspired community to connect with our collective joy being the center and only focus.
Weekly themes offered immersive explorations:
Week 1: Colors of Explosion – Celebrating Indigenous futures with an array of visual and musical interpretations with 3 live bands and DJ from multicultural backgrounds.
Week 2: Womb/Rebirth – Transforming the venue into a womb-like space, exploring origins and the feminine spirit with 3 live bands, fashion show that centered around vulva, femme only dance battle.
Week 3: Dreamstate – Featuring a mini-orchestra and handmade clouds floating all across venue, $5 massages, laying down on cushions, creating a sanctuary for intentional rest.
Week 4: Active Meditation – Inviting participants into a ritual of dance as collective liberation. With now-worldwide 4 live-electronica acts, dance battle.
The response was immediate and overwhelming. The residency drew a capacity crowd of 400 each week at venue capacity, with no media coverage, no industry backing, and no external funding—just pure artistic energy and the community’s shared desire to connect and create. Audiences described it as a “movement,” electrified by the accessibility and inclusivity of this multicultural, multidisciplinary experience.
Since that time, Elle and Rhys have grown substantially as artists and professionals, collaborating on music videos, major festivals, and projects with institutions like the National Gallery of Victoria. Although their careers have evolved and gained professional recognition, the energy and ambition from those early days continue to inform their work. Six years on, they are ready to revive that original spirit on an international stage, combining their refined skills and expanded networks to foster new spaces for art and community.
This is their “now or never” moment—a chance to reconnect with their roots of creative ambition and multi-layered collaboration, infused with the experience and vision to bring their work to a global audience.
